Secure customer confidence with the certification of your industrially compostable products

Enhance the confidence of your customers and business partners through our transparent and impartial certifications. With our test marks, you provide internationally recognized proof of the industrial compostability of your biodegradable products and clearly differentiate yourself from your competitors. The transparent decision support and guidance for your customers secures your valuable competitive advantage in the market.

Our experts evaluate and certify your compostable products in the following steps:

1. The following tests may be required for certification:

  • Chemical characterization (heavy metals and other toxic substances)
  • Testing for complete biodegradability
  • Disintegration under practice-relevant composting conditions and definition of the quality of the compost (ecotoxicity test on two plant species)
  • Infrared spectrum to identify the material
  • For certification according to AS 4736, the test for earthworm toxicity is also required

2. Registration / Certification

  • Registration: Materials (e.g. granules), semi-finished products (e.g. foils) and additives can be registered. The registration is valid for six years and can be used for marketing and advertising purposes.
  • Certification: Products for commerce (e.g. shopping bags, cutlery or garbage bags) can be certified. The certification is valid for three years and includes the right to use the "Seedling" and / or DIN-Geprüft mark.

3. Inspection test

Regular inspections confirm and ensure continuous compliance with the certification requirements. This test is carried out by recording the infrared spectrum. In addition, it is necessary to carry out a chemical characterization during the runtime.

4. Extension

With successfully completed monitoring checks, the certificate or the registration can be extended with a simple application. In the process, a conformity assessment is performed again and it will be examined, for example, whether the formulation has been adapted.

The scope of testing can be minimized if, for example, already tested and registered materials or certified additives have been used. As a rule, certification for both characters can be based on the same test reports.

What is the difference between the Seedling / DIN-Geprüft industrial compostable?

Both marks are based on DIN EN 13432 and, where applicable, other national and international standards and refer to industrial composting. While the Seedling certificate is issued by DIN CERTCO as the certification body for the owner of the mark European Bioplastics e.V. , the DIN-Geprüft industrial compostability mark is a DIN CERTCO mark of its own. Both marks can be used individually, alternatively or simultaneously and document the degradability of your products in industrial composting plants.

What can I have certified? What is a product / a material / an intermediate?

Certifiable are industrially compostable products made of biodegradable materials, but also the material(s) and the intermediated themselves.

A finished end product is e.g. straw, cup, lid, bag, etc. A material is for example a granulate, an intermediate is for example a foil.

How long are the certificates valid and what can I do with the certificate or mark?

The certificate for products is valid for 3 years and one receives the right to use the seedling and/or the DIN-Geprüft mark. You are then entitled to use the internationally known marks in a variety of ways in your communication. Whether on the Internet, in an advertisement or brochure, as well as in all other advertising material and, if applicable, on the product, you can make your competitive advantage visible - but please always in conjunction with the corresponding registration number.

he notification of registration for materials and intermediates is valid for 6 years; the right of use of the Seedling is limited here to the use of the symbol for advertising purposes.

What is a sub-license?

Should you buy a DIN CERTCO-certified product directly from the manufacturer and would like to sell it in your own name and use the Seedling and/or the DIN-Geprüft mark, or are you a manufacturing plant that produces certified products for another company and would like to obtain your own certificate and right to use the mark? Then you can apply for a sub-icense with the consent of the main certificate holder. You can choose between your own registration number or the registration number of the manufacturer and receive a sub-license with less certification effort and lower certification costs. Surveillance is covered by the main certificate (except if sub-licensee is a manufacturing site). The sub-license is always dependent on the main certificate in all respects.

What does a (sub)license cost?

We work transparently and calculate the certification costs according to our current schedule of fees . The costs of an initial certification are approximately between EUR 2,200 and EUR 3,400; the costs for a sub-license are approximately between EUR 1,100 and EUR 1,400.

Do I have to pay more?

After the initial certification, the licence fees for the use of the seedling and / or DIN-Geprüft mark are due annually. Further costs are incurred when renewing a certificate and for verification test and can be found in the fee schedule.

What does annual fee, renewal and verification test mean?

Annual fees: Annual fees for the use of the compostability mark ("Seedling") according to § 9 of the trademark rules of European Bioplastics e. V. + fees per certificate/notification of registration for the Seedling and the DIN-Geprüft mark.

Renewal: When the validity date is reached, an application for renewal may be submitted to maintain the certificate/registration for another 3 or 6 years. The renewal procedure will be invoiced according to the currently valid schedule of fees. The data sheet and the composition must again be indicated when submitting the application.

Verification test: for certified products, a surveillance test must be carried out every year: annually: an infrared transmission spectrum and a layer thickness measurement, once during the 3-year period additionally a chemical analysis; for registered materials / intermediates, the same scope of testing applies, but at 2-year intervals.

No verification test is required for sub-certificates, as they are covered by the main certificate/producer. Exception: if the sub-licensee is also a manufacturing site.

What can be certified with a certificate, why do some things only go separately (e.g.: mug + lid, garbage and shopping bags, what does the term "dishes" cover?)

European Bioplastics e.V. has defined the rules for certification in its certification programme .

Here, for example, a distinction is made between the areas of application of the products / the inteded use:

Bin liners / waste bags and shopping bags cannot be combined in one certificate, nor can cups and lids (except in a very few exceptional cases).

Therefore "tableware" cannot include cups and lids, but only plates, bowls, platters etc. Mugs and lids were then given a separate certificate.

What do I have to do to have my product / material / intermediate certified?

You fill out our application form and send it to us by e-mail (environment@ dincertco.de)

How do I fill out the application?

Here you can see a sample application for an initial certification.

Please read the application carefully and mark the required fields with a cross. Please fill in the data sheet with all necessary information about the composition of your product / material / intermediate and do not forget to sign and stamp the application.

What information does DIN CERTCO need to process my application as quickly as possible?

In order to avoid loss of time due to queries, the information on the data sheet is of great importance. An evaluation of your product / material / intermediate can only be made if, among other things, the information on the composition is complete and it is clearly visible whether you are applying for certification / registration of a product / material / intermediate. Please send us the safety data sheets of the individual ingredients together with your application. Should we still have questions, we will contact you.

How do I apply for BPI / ABA / REAL?

If you are interested in certification by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) for the American and Canadian markets,in certification for the Australian and New Zealand (Australasia) markets according to the AS 4736 standard by the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA) and the certification system there, or interested in certification fort he UK market according to the REAL scheme, you can find the respective contacts on our application form .

If you are interested in BPI / ABA /REAL with an initial certification in addition to the Seedling and / or DIN-Geprüft, please tick the appropriate box in our application form, so that our assessment can take the requirements of these certifications into account. A separate application directly to BPI and / or ABAand / or REAL is nevertheless necessary.

What is a pre-assessment? What do I do after I have received the evaluation result?

The assessment is the result you receive from us after a complete examination of the information and documents submitted. The pre-assessment contains information about the scope of testing or test reports required for certification.

If test reports are not yet available and you would like to have the tests carried out, we will be pleased to provide you with our quotation for the costs of the tests and assist you in commissioning a DIN CERTCO-recognised testing laboratory. Alternatively, you can of course order the necessary tests directly from a DIN CERTCO-recognized laboratory.

Which tests must I have carried out?

You will receive the scope of the required tests with our pre-assessment and depends on the individual composition of your product / material / intermediate.

What is the difference between a pre- assessment and an assessment / evaluation?

The most common question we are asked is: what tests do I need to have done and what does it cost? This information often has to be checked again in the company before the certification process can be started.

For this reason, it is possible to obtain precisely this information by means of a so-called pre-assessment. If the certification process is then commenced, the payment already made for the pre-assessment is offset against the further certification costs.

What does the exam cost?

Unfortunately there is no general answer to this question.

In the worst case of a complete examination, the costs can be calculated upwards from 20,000 EUR. To enable us to answer this question individually for your product / material / intermediate, the complete information from the application and the safety data sheets of the individual ingredients are required for the evaluation.

When is an infrared spectrum, chemical analysis, disintegration test, ecotoxicity test, complete biodegradation required?

The following tests may be required for certification:

  • Chemical characterization (heavy metals and other toxic substances)
  • Testing for complete biodegradability/disintegration under composting conditions relevant to practice
  • Determination of the quality of composts (ecotoxicity test on 2 plant species)
  • Infrared spectrum for identification of the material
  • For certification according to AS 4736, testing for earthworm toxicity is also required

How long does the examination take?

It depends on the exam. Some tests require preparation, e.g. of the test samples, before the actual test can start. Our accredited laboratories are all working to full capacity, so that the test cannot always start immediately after receipt of the test samples.

In the case of a complete test, you can expect up to 9 months or even 1 year. A "simple" ecotoxicity test can take 2 months, a chemical analysis about 6 weeks and an IR spectrum about 4 weeks. The duration of a test therefore depends on several factors and can only be clarified in each individual case.

Which samples do I have to submit for the examination?

After you have received the result of our assessment and, if applicable, you have received and accepted our offer for the testing costs, we will first invoice you for the testing costs in advance. After receipt of payment we will inform you about the required sample quantities and the shipping details of the respective laboratory.

Why do I have to pay the test costs in advance?

DIN CERTCO is a certification body which, as an additional service, is happy to take over and coordinate testing in a recognised laboratory for you. As a private company, it is not possible for us to pay all the costs of a product test in advance.

ow is the laboratory commissioned?

You can view the laboratories recognized by DIN CERTCO in our list and contact them directly. We would be pleased to take on the test order for you and prepare our offer in advance. Please contact us.

Why are so many steps necessary before the testing can finally start?

The way to the certificate seems complicated, but it is only a little bit. The reason is that every product, every material and every intermediate has an individual composition. Therefore, each application must be examined intensively and further documents and information may have to be requested. In the specific field of biodegradable products and materials / intermediates no standardisation can be made.

he use of components already registered and / or certified by DIN CERTCO in the product / material / intermediates to be certified can reduce the scope of testing and facilitate the certification process.

How long does it take to receive my certificate?

As soon as the test reports are complete, they will be subject to a final evaluation. If the assessment is positive, you will receive your certificate after about 10 days.

What are the other possibilities for certification in the environmental sector?

Are our certified products affected by the Single Use Plastics Directive?
