Biodegradable mulch films and materials made from bio-plastics: we guide you through certification | DIN CERTCO

Biodegradable in Soil - Indispensable Test Mark for Mulch Films

Especially with mulch films and other products that fulfil their function in the soil, biodegradation in the soil is crucial. It prevents the accumulation of pollutants, protects soil quality and supports the sustainable use of our resources.

With the DIN-Geprüft "biodegradable in soil" certification, manufacturers and users take responsibility - for healthy soil, functioning cycles and a future worth living.

Certification for biodegradable mulch films, materials, intermediates and additives in accordance with DIN EN 17033 and/or ISO 23517

Mulch films help to protect plants, improve the soil and increase yields in agriculture and horticulture. However, not all of them are equally suitable. For example, the remains of conventional mulch films have to be collected after use. More and more agricultural and horticultural businesses are therefore switching to biodegradable mulch films. Their unique advantage is that they can simply remain in the soil after use.

Biodegradable in soil certification - in accordance with ISO 23517 for products used in horticulture and agriculture and funeral products that have a function in or near the soil

In addition, products used in horticulture and agriculture (e.g., drip tape, twine, clips, tree guards, and plant pots) and funeral products (e.g.,urns, coffins, and shrouds) that have a function in or near the soil can be certified according to ISO 23517.

Test principles

The certification scheme "DIN-Geprüft Biodegradable in Soil" is based on the following standards:

  • DIN EN 17033 " Plastics - Biodegradable mulch films for use in agriculture and horticulture - Requirements and test methods”
  • ISO 23517 " Plastics - Soil biodegradable materials for mulch films for use in agriculture and horticulture - Requirements and test methods regarding biodegradation, ecotoxicity and control of constituents".

Testing and certification

The tests are carried out in a testing laboratory recognized by DIN CERTCO. First, we evaluate the material composition and determine the test procedure. If your product meets the above requirements, you will receive the corresponding certificate.

The following test certificates are required:

  • Chemical characterization
  • Test for complete biodegradability in soil
  • Plant compatibility (ecotoxicity test)
  • Earthworm toxicity tests (acute or chronic)
  • Test for nitrification inhibition with soil microorganisms
  • Infrared transmission spectrum

Especially for mulch films additionally:

  • Dimensions, mechanical and optical properties
  • Designation and marking of the product

The certification of products, such as mulch films, is valid for three years. The period of validity for materials, intermediates and additives is six years.

External monitoring

The surveillance of products and additives is carried out annually. The Surveillance of raw materials and intermediates is conducted every two years.

How can I have my product certified?

Simply complete the application for certification to start the certification process. For the technical assessment, we require details of all ingredients and the safety data sheets. Of course, this information will be treated confidentially.

Please contact us if you have any questions in advance or would like a non-binding offer. We will be happy to support you.

How long does the certification process take?

This depends entirely on the required scope of testing, which is determined after receipt of the application based on the formulation and ingredients. Testing for biodegradability can take up to 2 years.

What factors influence the biodegradability of a product?

The biodegradability of a material is a system property that is essentially the result of three conditions:

a) The potential biodegradability of the material

b) The available surface area and shape of the product

c) The environmental conditions at the location of the product
