Industrial Compostable Products

Certification of products made of compostable materials to operate the conformity marks „DIN-Geprüft industrial compostable“ and the „Seedling“ compostability mark in accordance with EN 13432 and other national and international standards

Industrial Compostable Products

DIN CERTCO Gesellschaft für Konformitätsbewertung mbH offers certification for industrial compostable products made from biodegradable materials. It awards the "DIN-Geprüft Industrial Compostable" mark and the "Seedling" compostable mark along with an individual registration number. The two marks can be used individually, alternatively or in tandem.

DIN-Geprüft, Industrial Compostable

Seedling versus DIN-Geprüft Industrial Compostable

The two internationally recognised certification marks, i.e. the "Seedling" compostable mark and the "DIN-Geprüft Industrial Compostable" mark, are awarded on the basis of certification which have been developed in association with groups of Stakeholders and which are continuously refined.

Certification can be performed place on the basis of the standards specified below. Please note the differences between the two certification marks in this regard.

The Differences between the Two Marks at a Glance

Both certification marks are bound by the European standard:

  • DIN EN 13432 "Requirements for the application of packaging through composting and biodegradation"

Optionally, testing and certification for both marks can also be broadened to include the following standard(s):

  • ASTM D 6400 "Standard specification for compostable plastics"
  • DIN EN 14995 "Plastics – Evaluation of compostability – Test scheme and specifications"
  • ISO 17088"Specifications for compostable plastics"
  • ISO 18606"Packaging and the environment – Organic recycling"

The following standard can only be added optionally to the certification process in the case of the "DIN-Geprüft" mark:

  • AS 4736 "Biodegradable plastics – Biodegradable plastics suitable for composting and other microbial treatment"

Scope of Testing

The following tests are required in accordance with the standards mentioned above:

  • Chemical characterisation (heavy metals and other toxic substances)
  • Test for ultimate biodegradability
  • Disintegration under pilot-scale composting conditions and determination of the quality of the composts (ecotoxicity test on 2 types of plants)
  • Earthworm toxicity tests are also required in the case of certification in accordance with AS 4736.

Thanks to the modular nature of the certification schemes, the scope of testing can be minimised, for example, by using materials which have already been registered or by using certified additives. As a general rule, certification in accordance with both schemes can be conducted on the basis of the same test reports.

Materials (for example granulates) and semi-finished items (for example foils) can be registered. Registration is valid for six years and accords the right to use the mark for marketing and advertisment purposes. Products destined for commercial use, such as shopping bags or waste bags, can be certified. Certification is valid for three years and the certificate holder is granted the right to use the mark.

Verification Test

All registered or certified products undergo regular verification by means of IR spectroscopy. Chemical characterisation also has to be conducted once during the term of the certificate/registration validity.
