FIREPLACES FOR LIQUID FUELS
Fireplaces for liquid fuels (ethanol or gel fireplaces) have become more and more popular over the last several years. More and more people would like to have a fireplace atmosphere in their own home, but a classic fireplace cannot always be installed. The low space requirements, the economical purchase price and the fact that a chimney connection is not needed make ethanol fireplaces a good alternative. Just set it up and get started, they say.
But what about safety? Do the flames stay in the fireplace? How does the material used react to the additional chemical load due to ethanol? How hot do the surfaces become? How stable is the fireplace? How complete is the owner's manual? These safety criteria are assessed in a test according to E DIN 4734. A regular manufacturing control as part of the DIN-Geprüft certification ensures manufacturing quality that remains constant.
Trust is good - DIN-Geprüft is better
With the recognized and neutral DIN-Geprüft certification mark, DIN CERTCO allows manufacturers and retailers of ethanol and gel fireplaces the opportunity to convince their customers of the quality of their products, and assist them with their purchase decision - because our mark stands for confidence!
With the DIN certification, the manufacturer documents that its ethanol and gel fireplaces have been tested and certified with respect to all safety-relevant criteria listed in the standard by neutral, independent and competent bodies.
Testing foundations
The certification mark "DIN-Geprüft" (= Tested) is granted on the basis of the certification scheme for Fireplaces for liqued solid fuels which governs product testing and certification.
The certification scheme is based on this German standard:
It specify the requirements and testing procedures for fireplaces for liqued fuels. The following criteria are subject to the testing:
- Stability
- Safety to prevent fuel leakage (when the device is tipped)
- Fuel tank (leakage test, second external container)
- Ignition device (safe ignition)
- Fuel flow-rate (in the maximum operational setting, the device should not burn longer than 14 hours)
- Operating safety (flames spurting out)
- Combustion quality (determination of CO and CO2 emissions in an enclosed space at the minimum and maximum operational settings)
- Fire safety (floor temperature, partition wall temperature, temperature of the control handles, temperature of touchable surfaces, ignition, extinguishing of the flames, reignition)
- Predictable incorrect use (use of typical store-bought denatured alcohol)
- Electrical safety
- Marking (typeplate, warning sign, mark on the package)
Testing and assessment
Only those fireplaces for liquid fuels are certified with "DIN-Geprüft", that were successfully tested by a testing laboratory approved by DIN CERTCO, neutrally assessed and thus proofed their compliance with the relevant standards.
After a positive assessment result DIN CERTCO issues a certificate which is valid for six years. The registration number for a clear identification of the certified product has the following structure: 7Y000.
