DIN Geprüft bio-based - for more sustainability

Sustainability means, for instance, minimizing CO2 emissions and protecting resources, and making only minimal use of finite raw materials. Bio-based products based on renewable raw materials are indispensible components of environmentally sound recycling management. Show your customer this difference.

Bio-based products are completely or partially made from raw materials that have absorbed as much CO2 during their short growth as they emit when they are disposed of and/or incinerated.

Based on ASTM D 6866 "Standard Test Methods for Determining the Biobased Content of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous Samples Using Radiocarbon Analysis",, DIN SEPC 91236 (CEN/TS 16137) Plastics - Determination of bio-based carbon content, and/or the standard series ISO 16620 „Plastics -- Biobased content“ the 14C-method determines the activity of the carbon isotope 14C.

An entire product can be certified as a product unit, but so can only a certain part of a product unit, for example, the casing of a television.

The following tests are required by DIN CERTCO and conducted by a test laboratory recognized by DIN CERTCO:

- Determination of the total organic carbon

- Determination of the 14C content

The test reports submitted by the testing laboratory and other details on the product will be assessed by DIN CERTCO.

Basis of Testing

The certification scheme for bio-based products from DIN CERTCO specifies further characteristics as basis for testing and certification. Furthermore, the corresponding schedule of fees and the General Terms and Conditions of DIN CERTCO will effective.

Biobased

Testing and Assessment

The list of certificate holders will be updated on DIN CERTCO's on a daily basis, and can be identified with the corresponding registration number.

The certificate is valid for 6 years, and can be extended after the relevant tests and assessments.

Bio-based products can be biodegradable. This always depends on the chemical processing and on any additives that may be used. The compostability of a product is certified by the compostability marks issued by DIN CERTCO.

The product and its certified characteristics will be monitored continuously by DIN CERTCO.

After successful testing and a positive conformity assessment by DIN CERTCO of the application documents submitted, a certificate is issued and the usage rights for the DIN-Geprüft biobased mark are granted in connection with the corresponding registration number.

The corresponding schedule of fees and the general terms and conditions of DIN CERTCO apply.

Bio-based content

Based on the latest European standard development EN 16785-2015 Bio-based products - Bio-based content - Part 1: Determination of the bio-based content using the radiocarbon analysis and elemental analysis, DIN CERTCO offers this certification system in collaboration with the Netherlands Standardization Institute NEN.

The following tests are required by DIN CERTCO and conducted by a test laboratory recognized by DIN CERTCO:

  • - Elementary analyses of C, H, N, O
  • - Determination of the 14C content

The list of certificate holders will be updated on DIN CERTCO's on a daily basis, and can be identified with the corresponding registration number. Additionally, certificate holders are published on the project website.

The certificate is valid for 5 years, and can be extended after the relevant tests and assessments.
