DIN-Geprüft Biobased - for more Sustainability
Sustainability means, for instance, minimizing CO2 emissions and protecting resources, and making only minimal use of finite raw materials. Bio-based products based on renewable raw materials are indispensible components of environmentally sound recycling management. Show your customer this difference.
Bio-based products are completely or partially made from raw materials that have absorbed as much CO2 during their short growth as they emit when they are disposed of and/or burned. The total organic carbon content is determined for example according to DIN 18128 "Soil- Investigation and testing - Determination of ignition loss".
Testing Basis
Based on ASTM D 6866 "Standard Test Methods for Determining the Biobased Content of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous Samples Using Radiocarbon Analysis", the 14C-method determines the activity of the carbon isotope with the chemical symbol 14C. The standard CEN/TR 15932 " Plastics Recommendation for terminology and characterisation of bioplastics", that is still in development shows the requirements for a standardised terminology.
The certification scheme for bio-based products from DIN CERTCO specifies further characteristics as basis for testing and certification. Furthermore, the corresponding schedule of fees and the General Terms and Conditions of DIN CERTCO will effective.
An entire product can be certified as a product unit, but so can only a certain part of a product. For instance, the casing of a television.
The following tests are required by DIN CERTCO and conducted by a test laboratory recognised by DIN CERTCO:
- Determination of the total organic carbon
- Determination of the 14C content
The test reports submitted by the testing laboratory and other details on the product will be assessed by DIN CERTCO.
Testing and Assessment
The certificate holders will be published on DIN CERTCO's homepage every day, and can be identified with the corresponding registration number.
The certificate is valid for 5 years, and can be extended after the relevant tests and assessments.
Bio-based products can be biodegradable. This always depends on the chemical processing and on any additives that may be used. The compostability of a product is shown by the compostable mark issued by DIN CERTCO.
The product and its certified characteristics will be verified annually by DIN CERTCO.
After successful testing and a positive conformity assessment by DIN CERTCO of the application documents submitted, a certificate is issued and the rights to use the DIN-Geprüft quality mark is granted in connection with the corresponding registration number.
