DIN EDI

In the age of e-business and EDI (electronic data interchange), the mutual compatibility of programs and the smooth exchange of data is an essential requirement for problem-free business processes.

The uniform message types (UNSM United Nations Standard Messages) of the UN/EDIFACT specifications define in detail message function, structure and content of the files to be transferred by means of EDI. These message types can be used for global, cross-sector and source-independent applications.

For operative implementation in a specific sector, regularly defined subsets of a message type are adequate for defining in sufficient detail the desired business function. These subsets are generally defined and developed on a geographical (European, national) basis and/or on a sector-related basis. That is primarily undertaken at national level by trade/industrial/sectoral associations.

In order to keep the development and introduction of these subsets transparent and free from inconsistencies, central conformity testing and registration are necessary. The aim is to further improve the stability of the applications employing EDIFACT messages, to minimise the cost of change and adaptation, and to enhance confidence in EDIFACT. As a result of certification of the UNSM EDIFACT subsets, the number of derived message types is to be kept as low as possible. In addition, subsets of a sector that have the same function, and that are similar or largely identical in structure, are to be harmonised.

In Germany, DIN CERTCO offers this certification as a service in co-operation with DEDIG Deutsche EDI-Gesellschaft e.V.
