Certification of Paint Inspectors
Corrosion damage is responsible for huge losses to the whole national economy, both as a result of expensive repair work and of loss of output. Corrosion protection measures help to avoid or minimise these losses.
For most types of metal that are to be protected against corrosion, paint systems are used. Paint systems serve to separate surfaces from aggressive media. They can, however, only provide effective corrosion protection if they are applied with the necessary skill and expertise. That assumes special knowledge of the different forms of corrosion and corrosive phenomena, and also of the protective measures that are to be applied.
Paint inspectors have gained the required knowledge by way of further training and have deepened that knowledge by practical experience in its implementation. They possess the practical skills needed for selecting and applying corrosion protection systems.
Personal certification gives such paint inspectors the opportunity of documenting their qualification.
Basis for testing and DIN-certification
The DIN-certification of paint inspectors is based on the certification scheme "DIN-Geprüfter Beschichtungsinspektor / Paint Inspector" (= DIN-Tested) which was made in a narrow technical dependence on the Norwegian Standard
- NS 476 "Paints and coatings - Approval and certification of surface treatment inspectors"
Furthermore, the European Standard
- DIN EN ISO 12944 "Paints and varnishes - Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems", parts 1 to 8
is relevant for the examination with all of its normative references.
The DIN-certification of paint inspectors is undertaken in 3 levels:
- Level A: Fulfilment of requirements concerning training, expertise and accomplishments according to the certification scheme
- Level B: In addition, at least a full-time 2 years experience in the field of paint work inspection.
- Level C: In addition, at least a full-time 5 years experience in the field of paint work inspection.
Training
Participants must have completed job training in a relevant field. In addition, they should take part in further training courses in order to acquire the specific technical expertise.
At our partner institutes, especially the IKS Institute for Corrosion Protection in Dresden, the required expertise and the necessary practical skills are communicated via its "Paint Inspectors" training programme.
Testing and certification
Substantiation of the knowledge of theory and of the practical skills is undertaken by way of written and practical tests.
If, on evaluation of the results, the tests are deemed to have been passed, DIN CERTCO awards a certificate that is valid for a period of five years.
The registration No. for the identificaton of the DIN-certified paint inspector is structured as follows:
- Level A: PZ-BIA-000
- Level B: PZ-BIB-000
- Level C: PZ-BIC-000
Maintenance of expertise
During the period of validity of the certificate, DIN-certified paint inspectors must regularly demonstrate that they actually apply their knowledge and skills. On elapse of the validity of the certificate the validity of the certificate can be prolonged for further 5 years on application of the certificate holder provided that the conditions are fulfilled.
Personal certification provides proof of the competence of individuals. Personal certification can be useful in connection with the fulfilment of the requirements of the quality element "Training" in a quality management system. The certificate enables the expert to show that his expertise is always up to date.
